I sionisti liberal hanno smesso di credere che Israele si redimerà da solo

Per anni la posizione dei sionisti liberal [progressisti e moderatamente di sinistra, ndt.] è stata: “Stiamo con il meglio della natura di Israele, che si redimerà da solo.” Quello che hanno ottenuto in cambio di questa convinzione sono fascismo, razzismo violento e occupazione.

Adesso ciò sta cambiando. Grazie all’arroganza e al fascismo del governo di Netanyahu, i sionisti liberal americani si stanno rivoltando contro Israele. Stanno denunciando l’“apartheid” israeliana e chiedono boicottaggio e sanzioni contro Israele per le sue violazioni dei diritti umani.

Ovviamente i palestinesi e gli antisionisti dicono queste cose da molti anni. I sionisti liberal lo possono fare ora perché altri ebrei gli stanno dando il permesso di dirle. Ma, qualunque cosa uno pensi di tali politiche etnocentriche, nella comunità ebraica è in corso un cambiamento significativo (e certamente avrà conseguenze all’interno del Partito Democratico e, in ultima analisi, sulla politica USA).

Guardiamo come stanno le cose.

In primo luogo, c’è stata quella lettera del 5 agosto di studiosi ebrei/israeliani secondo cui Israele pratica “apartheid”, “suprematismo ebraico” e pulizia etnica con il beneplacito dei dirigenti degli ebrei americani. Ed è ora che gli ebrei americani chiedano un cambiamento. La lettera è nota perché uno dei firmatari è Benny Morris, uno studioso che ha giustificato l’espulsione dei palestinesi da parte di Israele durante la Nakba [la pulizia etnica durante la guerra del 1947-49, ndt.] come necessaria per la creazione di Israele.

Ora la lettera ha più di 1.900 firme, tra cui quella del 97enne Yehuda Bauer, uno studioso israeliano dell’Olocausto e presidente onorario in pensione dell’International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance [Alleanza Internazionale per il Ricordo dell’Olocausto, composta da 24 Paesi, per lo più europei, ndt.], che ha emanato la falsa definizione di antisemitismo che include le dure critiche a Israele. E c’è il docente di filosofia Avishai Margalit dell’Università Ebraica, un amico di Michael Walzer ( che non ha firmato).

La Finestra di Overton [che definisce la gamma di idee accettabili nel dibattito sulle politiche pubbliche, ndt.] di una discussione accettabile si sta spostando rapidamente, evidenzia Peter Beinart [famoso editorialista e commentatore politico USA, ndt.], che ha firmato. Altri firmatari statunitensi sono Riva Hocherman, direttrice esecutiva di Metropolitan Books [importante casa editrice statunitense, ndt.], Dan Fleshler di Ameinu [organizzazione sionista legata al partito Laburista israeliano, ndt.], il rabbino Michael Lerner [politico e religioso californiano moderatamente critico con Israele, ndt.], David Nasaw, storico presso la CUNY [l’università della città di New York, ndt.], lo studioso Stephen Zunes [docente di relazioni internazionali contrario all’occupazione israeliana, ndt.] e il rabbino Arthur Waskow (mio collega studente al college della città di Baltimora).

All’inizio di questo mese, dopo che il parlamento israeliano ha sfidato le proteste di massa e ha votato per ridurre fortemente il potere della Corte [suprema] a favore del governo, vergogna riguardo a Israele, indignazione e richieste di agire sono argomenti di una discussione tra ebrei americani afflitti pubblicata da “Americans for Peace Now” [associazione USA affiliata all’omonima organizzazione pacifista israeliana, ndt.].

Queste sono alcune delle opinioni più taglienti:

Diane Blumson ha affermato che è tempo che i dirigenti dell’ebraismo statunitense chiamino Israele a rispondere delle violazioni dei diritti umani che risalgono a 75 anni fa:

“Provo una grande sofferenza e rabbia. Voglio sentire dai pulpiti di tutti i nostri rabbini e cantori che dobbiamo smettere di difendere Israele in quanto vittima come modo per giustificare le violazioni che hanno angariato i palestinesi fin dalla nascita dello Stato.”

Heidi Feldman ha osato condannare gli ignobili aspetti della formazione dell’identità ebraica:

“E’ come leggere la Bibbia, le parti imbarazzanti in cui gli israeliti sono bellicosi, insensibili, prepotenti e aggressivi sia nei confronti delle tribù attorno a loro che di chi tra loro è scettico. Non è l’ebraismo in cui io credo, io credo in un ebraismo in cui amiamo il nostro vicino, amiamo persino lo straniero.”

Harry Appelman ha invocato finalmente l’emancipazione dei palestinesi:

“Dobbiamo portare i cittadini palestinesi fuori dai margini e nel dibattito (e nell’elettorato), concentrando le proteste e le discussioni sull’occupazione.”

Anche Robert Snyder ha reso onore al potenziale politico dei palestinesi:

“(Dobbiamo) lavorare sempre più con i palestinesi all’interno di Israele e in Cisgiordania. Gli ebrei progressisti e liberal ora condividono molti interessi con i palestinesi all’interno di Israele e dovrebbero votare insieme per costruire una nuova maggioranza.” Ho più volte affermato che questo pensiero porta inevitabilmente a invocare uno Stato unico democratico e il BDS [movimento per il Boicottaggio, il Disinvestimento e le Sanzioni contro Israele, ndt.].

Questo è un ragionamento di Michael Rahimi a favore del boicottaggio:

“Domani vado a Tel Aviv a trovare i miei parenti e accomiatarmi da loro. Finché le cose non cambieranno non tornerò in Israele. Non posso più sopportare quello che il Paese è diventato ed è un crimine quello che ne hanno fatto negli ultimi 20 anni… Lo stanno trasformando in un abominio.”

Ci sono state varie richieste a Biden di agire. Sembra la posizione di J Street [associazione filo-israeliana moderatamente contraria all’occupazione e legata al Partito Democratico, ndt.]. Dannazione, Biden deve fare qualcosa. Ma cosa? Non lo sappiamo! Da un anonimo:

“Penso che tutti sappiamo che c’è bisogno della voce di Biden. Temo che finora la risposta di Biden sia stata piuttosto moderata.”

Elliot Feldman chiede delle sanzioni:

È finito il tempo in cui erano sufficienti i discorsi. Le azioni di Israele devono avere delle conseguenze. L’amministrazione Biden potrebbe iniziare tornando indietro rispetto alla dottrina Pompeo [ministro degli Esteri dell’amministrazione Trump, ndt.]. Potrebbe aprire un ufficio consolare a Gerusalemme est. Potrebbe ri-destinare parte dell’aiuto militare a Israele per ricostruire case, comunità e infrastrutture palestinesi. Potrebbe mostrare un’opposizione più vigorosa nei confronti dell’ambiguità di Israele riguardo all’Ucraina.”

Robert O. Freedman vede favorevolmente un colpo di stato militare!

“Finché questo processo non verrà fermato o da uno sciopero generale che blocchi il Paese… o persino da un colpo di stato da parte dei generali israeliani che non vogliono veder svanire il potere di deterrenza delle IDF [l’esercito israeliano, ndt.], il futuro di Israele sembra piuttosto cupo.”

Parecchie voci parlano di guerra civile: “Sento che lo scenario da incubo di ebrei contro ebrei è arrivato,” dice uno.

Ricordo che quando questo sito iniziò ad esistere le persone dicevano abitualmente a me e ad Adam Horowitz [direttore esecutivo di Mondoweiss, ndt.]: “Perché presentate ogni giorno cattive notizie su Israele, sembrate ossessionati.” E io rispondevo: “Beh, noi siamo ossessionati, questo è un grande problema ebreo/americano, ci impedisce di vedere il sole.” Quindi non ce ne staremo zitti e a volte essere dissonanti è una virtù. Oggi sembra che ogni minuto che passa abbiamo sempre più compagnia.

L’elefante nella stanza*

Pubblichiamo questa lettera aperta inviata alle organizzazioni della comunità ebraica statunitense da più di 900 (ma il numero continua ad aumentare) accademici, intellettuali, artisti, anche rabbini. I firmatari italiani sono una dozzina, il più famoso dei quali è il professor Marcello Flores. L’intento è quello di convincere i dirigenti delle varie associazioni ebraiche a intervenire per porre fine al sostegno nei confronti del governo israeliano e all’occupazione. Ci sono alcuni aspetti particolarmente rilevanti di questa lettera. In primo luogo il fatto che vi si faccia costante riferimento al regime di apartheid imposto da Israele sui palestinesi. In secondo luogo si invita a fare pressione per impedire che gli aiuti militari USA a Israele vengano utilizzati nei territori occupati. Infine l’appello è stato firmato anche da accademici noti per le loro posizioni filo-sioniste, come David Myers, Dov Waxman, Shaul Magid, Daniel Levy e Benny Morris. Quest’ultimo è il più noto e significativo (tra l’altro è tra i primi firmatari). Morris è stato uno dei capofila della nuova storiografia israeliana, che, attraverso lo studio della documentazione presente negli archivi israeliani, ha smontato la narrazione ufficiale riguardo in particolare alla guerra del 1947-49 e alla pulizia etnica a danno dei palestinesi. In seguito però Morris ha preso posizioni anche molto radicali a favore del progetto sionista e delle politiche nei confronti dei palestinesi. A giudicare dal suo appoggio a questo appello c’è da sperare che si sia ravveduto.

Lettera aperta 

Noi, accademici e personaggi pubblici in Israele/Palestina e all’estero, richiamiamo l’attenzione sul collegamento diretto tra il recente attacco di Israele al sistema giudiziario e la sua oppressione illegale di milioni di palestinesi nei Territori palestinesi occupati. Il popolo palestinese viene privato di quasi tutti i diritti fondamentali, compreso il diritto di voto e di protesta. Affronta continue violenze: solo quest’anno, le forze israeliane hanno ucciso oltre 190 palestinesi in Cisgiordania e a Gaza e demolito oltre 590 strutture. I vigilantes dei coloni bruciano, saccheggiano e uccidono impunemente.

Senza pari diritti per tutti, in uno Stato, in due Stati o in qualsiasi altro quadro politico, c’è sempre il pericolo di una dittatura. Non ci può essere democrazia per gli ebrei in Israele finché i palestinesi vivono sotto un regime di apartheid – come lo hanno definito gli esperti legali israeliani. In effetti, lo scopo ultimo della riforma giudiziaria è quello di inasprire le restrizioni su Gaza, privare i palestinesi di uguali diritti sia oltre la Linea Verde che al suo interno, annettere più terra e operare una pulizia etnica in tutti i territori sotto il dominio israeliano a danno della loro popolazione palestinese. I problemi non sono iniziati con l’attuale governo radicale: il suprematismo ebraico è in crescita da anni ed è stato sancito dalla Legge sullo Stato Nazione del 2018.

Gli ebrei americani sono stati a lungo in prima linea nelle cause per la giustizia sociale, dall’uguaglianza razziale al diritto all’aborto, ma non hanno prestato sufficiente attenzione all’elefante nella stanza: l’occupazione di lunga data di Israele che, ripetiamo, ha prodotto un regime di apartheid. Man mano che Israele si è spostato più a destra ed è caduto sotto l’incantesimo dell’agenda messianica, omofoba e misogina dell’attuale governo, i giovani ebrei americani se ne sono progressivamente estraniati. Nel frattempo, i miliardari finanziatori ebrei americani aiutano a sostenere l’estrema destra israeliana.

In questo pressante frangente, che è anche una possibilità di cambiamento, chiediamo ai leader dell’ebraismo nordamericano – leader di fondazioni, studiosi, rabbini, educatori – di

1. Sostenere il movimento di protesta israeliano, ma invitandolo ad accogliere nel suo programma l’uguaglianza per ebrei e palestinesi all’interno della Linea Verde e nei TPO.

2. Sostenere le organizzazioni per i diritti umani che difendono i palestinesi e forniscono informazioni in tempo reale sulla realtà vissuta di occupazione e apartheid.

3. Impegnarsi a rivedere le disposizioni educative e i programmi di studio per bambini e giovani ebrei al fine di fornire una valutazione più corretta del passato e del presente di Israele.

4. Chiedere ai leader eletti negli Stati Uniti di aiutare a porre fine all’occupazione, di impedire l’uso degli aiuti militari americani nei Territori palestinesi occupati e di porre fine all’impunità israeliana alle Nazioni Unite e in altre organizzazioni internazionali.

Basta silenzio. È il momento di agire.

Ebrei israeliani chiedono: Basta con l’apartheid israeliano. Lettera aperta alla comunità internazionale

Noi, ebrei israeliani, ci opponiamo alle azioni del governo israeliano e quindi dichiariamo il nostro impegno ad agire contro di esse. Ci rifiutiamo di accettare il regime suprematista ebraico e chiediamo alla comunità internazionale di intervenire immediatamente in difesa dei palestinesi a Gaza, in Cisgiordania, a Gerusalemme, in Galilea, nel Negev, a Lydda, Giaffa, Ramleh, Haifa e in tutta la Palestina storica.

Il suprematismo ebraico è la pietra angolare del regime israeliano e il suo coerente obiettivo è espellere e cancellare il popolo palestinese, la sua storia e la sua identità nazionale. Questo obiettivo si manifesta in continui atti di pulizia etnica mediante sfratti e demolizioni di case, brutale occupazione militare, negazione dei diritti civili e umani ed emanazione di una serie di leggi razziste culminate nella legge Stato-Nazione, che definisce lo Stato come “lo Stato Nazione del popolo ebraico ”, e solo di quest’ultimo.

Tutto ciò costituisce di fatto un regime di apartheid che crea aree simili a bantustan e ghetti per le comunità native palestinesi. Crediamo che il sionismo sia un principio di governo non etico che porta intrinsecamente a un regime di apartheid razzista che per oltre settanta anni ha commesso crimini di guerra e negato ai palestinesi i diritti umani fondamentali. Tali crimini e violazioni includono: la distruzione di centinaia di città e villaggi e il loro spopolamento di 750.000 palestinesi nel 1948, impedendo nel contempo attivamente il ritorno dei rifugiati; l’espropriazione sistematica delle terre dei palestinesi e il loro trasferimento a proprietari ebrei sotto gli auspici dello Stato; l’occupazione della Cisgiordania, della Striscia di Gaza e delle alture del Golan e la messa in pratica di un regime militare colonizzatore, che governa su milioni di palestinesi; la graduale annessione dei territori occupati nel 1967 con una violenta operazione di ingegneria demografica; l’assedio in corso contro la Striscia di Gaza e i persistenti massacri della popolazione di Gaza da parte dell’aviazione israeliana; la persecuzione politica dei palestinesi in tutta la Palestina e l’incitamento in corso contro la leadership politica e la società in generale. Tutte queste atrocità hanno luogo a causa dell’impunità di cui Israele gode da parte della comunità internazionale e in particolare degli Stati Uniti.

Nelle ultime settimane, il governo israeliano ha aumentato i suoi tentativi di impossessarsi di case palestinesi a Gerusalemme Est (specialmente nel quartiere di Sheikh Jarrah) e ospitarvi coloni ebrei con l’obiettivo di completare l’ebraizzazione della città iniziata nel 1967. Durante il mese di Ramadan le forze israeliane hanno intensificato il loro violento assalto al complesso della moschea di Al Aqsa, dando ai coloni il via libera per vandalizzare e aggredire fisicamente i palestinesi in Cisgiordania, Gerusalemme e in tutti i territori del ’48. Folle di coloni agiscono sotto l’egida della polizia israeliana e in coordinamento con essa. I media israeliani stanno partecipando alla sfrenata istigazione contro i cittadini arabi di Israele. Di conseguenza, le bande di ebrei godono dell’impunità per la loro violenza, mentre centinaia di cittadini palestinesi di Israele vengono arrestati per aver protetto le proprie case e comunità, o semplicemente per essere stati nel posto sbagliato al momento sbagliato.

Di tanto in tanto Israele commette un ulteriore massacro contro la popolazione del ghetto di Gaza, rifiutando iniziative e proposte di cessate il fuoco con le organizzazioni palestinesi nella Striscia di Gaza e continuando con la distruzione di quartieri residenziali nella Striscia di Gaza e con il brutale assedio imposto contro circa due milioni di persone.

Come individui che si trovano dalla parte dell’oppressore e che hanno cercato per anni di spostare l’opinione pubblica in Israele al fine di cambiare dalle fondamenta l’attuale regime, siamo da molto tempo giunti alla conclusione che è impossibile cambiare il regime suprematista ebraico senza un intervento esterno.

Chiediamo alla comunità internazionale di intervenire immediatamente per fermare le attuali aggressioni israeliane, di accogliere le richieste del movimento palestinese per il Boicottaggio, il Disinvestimento e le Sanzioni, di agire per l’attuazione del diritto al ritorno dei palestinesi e per realizzare la giustizia storica, di raggiungere una soluzione giusta e democratica per tutti, basata sulla decolonizzazione della regione e sulla fondazione di uno Stato di tutti i suoi cittadini.
